West Monroe Holds Off Booker T. Washington, Wins Battle On The Border 31-20
West Monroe (LA) defeats Booker T. Washington (OK) 31-20 at the Battle on the Border on Friday night in Shreveport, LA.
SHREVEPORT, LA -- West Monroe (LA) seized an early 13-0 lead and answered every Booker T. Washington (OK) counter punch the rest of the way en route to a 30-21 victory at the Battle on the Border on Friday night.
Cameron Wright put the Rebels (3-0) on the board with a 37-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter. Less than two minutes later, Max Hunter took a Hornets punt 53 yards to the house to make it a two-score game.
Booker T. Washington (2-1) quarterback Phillip Wheatley found Mahcel Johnson for a touchdown to cut into the West Monroe lead, but the Rebels' Slade Bolden capped the first-half scoring two possessions later by delivering a 22-yard strike to Jairus Henry.
The Hornets struck first in the second half, when Mahcoe Edwards ran under a perfectly thrown deep ball from Wheatley and raced in from 44 yards out to cut the Rebels' lead to 20-14 with 3:47 to play in the third.
After a bad shotgun snap was recovered by West Monroe, the Rebels were staring at fourth and 8 from the Hornets 34-yard line when Bolden flashed the playmaking ability that has ultimately punched his ticket to the University of Alabama, racing for 29 yards to set up first and goal from the 5-yard line.
Two plays later, Wright found the end zone again, powering in from 5 yards out to push the Rebels lead back to two possessions at 27-14.
The Hornets, to their credit, refused to go away. On the first play of the ensuing drive, Wheatley connected with Easton Cope on an 87-yard pitch and catch to again cut the lead to six, 27-21, with 9:40 to go.
Unfortunately for Booker T. Washington, the comeback would fall short, as a time-consuming Rebels drive was capped with a Reese Aultmann field goal to set the final margin at 30-21.
